Mike is reminding mom that he works in NYC but lives in NJ which isn't known for its air quality. That being said the area that I live in is no where near the smelly part of NJ.

mom is explaining to Mike that I was guessing you would possibly be working since you sometimes are on the weekend which would have put you in the BIG APPLE
