I prefer to live in a country where people are not judged by the color of their skin nor the gender that they were born with but by the content of their character.
Let me throw out the disclaimer early on. I am a conservative republican who holds my country's values and the very foundation in which is it was created in the highest esteem.
The Declaration of Independence:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with inherent and inalienable rights; that among these, are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; that to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.
The Bill of Rights:
Amendement I - freedom of speech
Amendement IV - defense against unreasonable searches and seizures
Amendement XIX - The right to vote shall not be denied or abridged on account of sex.
Let's look at McCarthyism, shall we?
Merriam Webster's Dictionary defines McCarthyism as...
a mid-20th century political attitude characterized chiefly by opposition to elements held to be subversive and by the use of tactics involving personal attacks on individuals by means of widely publicized indiscriminate allegations especially on the basis of unsubstantiated charges.
Now, for the break down:
The term McCarthyism in today's American vernacular is a general term for the phenomenon of mass pressure, harassment, or blacklisting used to instill conformity with prevailing political beliefs. The act of making insufficiently supported accusations or engaging in unfair investigatory methods against a person as a purported attempt to unfairly silence or discredit them is often referred to, in this day and age, as McCarthyism.
The legacy of McCarthyism can be traced to the FBI's secret COINTELPRO program of harassing political dissenters in the 1960s and 1970s, the Watergate-related felonies of the Nixon White House in the 1970s, and the Iran-Contra scandals in the 1980s. The pervasiveness of such wrongdoing reveals how seriously the nation's defenses against official illegalities had eroded in the face of claims that national security took precedence over ordinary law. McCarthyism alone did not cause these outrages; but the assault on democracy that began during the 1940s and 1950s.
Now tell me this doesn't sound like a blatant violation of civil rights and reeks of a Third Reich\Nazi Party type mentality.
There may have been a place for McCarthyism during the mid-20th century, when people were like lambs being lead to the slaughter. Fortunately, in today's society, there is no place for this archaic and drone-like philosophy!
