I've used several different Voice over net apps including Netmeeting. They work well but don't have the quality i'm getting from Skype. The main reason I like it is even my Mom can set it up. No savviness required!
About the privacy... I think somebody's a little paranoid. I suppose if you want to use it to carry on an affair you might be concerned but the encryp-decryp scheme looks fairly advanced. I'd say more secure than AIM... far more since a sniff will just detect an encrypted data stream and a keyboard recorder won't get anything at all.
