Tech from Star Trek - Would you rather have...

While both the replicator and teleporter have more tangible benefits, I think the holodeck would do a lot more for one's amusement - you can "live out" any scenario (*cough*cough*) you wanted without even leaving the house.

I think the hardest thing would be keeping it secret enough that the goverment or some other thieves don't take it from you. :dondoit:

it's my understanding that the replicator is based on transporter technology. A replicator is just a transporter that accesses a large database of patterns to materialize, whereas a transporter fills the pattern buffer with a new object each transport. So really you can't have replication without transport technology.
That, of course, makes the whole idea of replication a little scary, doesn't it?
The deal with the transporter was that your "pattern" got put into some sort of enormous memory buffer that stored your entire body in some kind of electronic description. Then, you could be re-integrated, based on the pattern. Nobody ever discussed why this could or could not be used to clone humans or anything for that matter...
It makes you really think. Is a person just a bunch of cells in a specific organization? I'm an atheist, but it's hard to imagine that such a thing would actually be possible.

Oooh, actually I forgot something. There was a TNG episode where Ryker got cloned. His "other" self was left behind on some outpost...
So, apparently, yes... The writers of Star Trek did show that such an idea was possible. That whole episode, by the way, was all about how environment had affected Ryker's goals/personality. They never followed up on that.
