So where do you buy the bees then ??

 

A colony usually lives for years and re queens itself. I've only had to buy bees twice in 10 years.
Eight years ago I ordered them from a apiary in Texas, this year they all died unexpectedly last spring so I drove up to a bee supply store in the rural town of Snohomish, about an hour north, and bought them. Carried them home in the passenger seat of my S. They are in a screened box, none can escape. When I got home I took them out to the hive and first put the queen who is in her cute little cage into my pocket, then I shook all the bees into the hive and added the queen.

It was a cool day, I usually wear a regular cotton sweatshirt but this day I wore an old polor fleece sweatshirt. Bad Idea. The bees feet STICK to polor fleece and I ended up bringing a bunch back in the house with me much to my families dismay and horror They shake right off a cotton sweatshirt, but not the evil bee trapping polor fleece! So I learned something new about fabrics and insects!

 

I have a real phobia of bees ..... some people can just stand there and let them fly around them, I can stay still for a couple of seconds but then that's it, I just freak out
