Today is an important day. It marks the day when freedom and all the other virtues our Constitution stands for was challenged right in our own backyard. Today should be marked as a day of infamy because our enemies sought out thousands of American civilians for murder and succeeded. They attacked our civilians as they went to work rather than our military. Yet they touted us as cowards.

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, they attacked our Pacific fleet and it was an act of war. When the terrorists flew commercial jetliners into office buildings containing defenseless civilians it becomes indescribable... It becomes an act of inhumanity.

Today, we will mourn the loss of thousands of innocent civilians on that day one year ago. However, they are not the only casualties. Families and friends of those who lost their lives, soldiers who died in the continuing fight against terrorism and their families, firefighters, police officers, construction workers who spent nine long months cleaning up the WTC site and anyone else who has been significantly affected by this senseless act are all casualties of the attack. These are the people who need our prayers.

Today should remind us that democracy and freedom come with a price: Diligence. Regardless of how much ocean separates us from the rest of the world, complacency only serves to reap the atrocities that occurred one year ago. We must know our enemy. Our enemy is not the Islamic faith. Those who exploit religion to justify their anti-American campaign are our enemy. Ignorance is our enemy. Selfishness is our enemy.

Today, we are united as Americans. Today, we are truly brothers and sisters. Our ethnicity or background will not matter. Some of us will cry while others will be shoulders. Some of us will hold while others will be held. But whatever the experience, we will be together.

Today, WE will show the world and our enemies that we are STILL "One nation, under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for All."

Today is an important day.

God Bless You All and God Bless America,
Carlo

Good words, Carlo -- and ones we need to remember every day.

One note of interest that may draw some flames: I heard an interview with a psychologist on the news the other day. He said that the worst thing that can be done for people who were directly affected by 9/11 last year is to continue to rehash the event, as the media are prone to do. They said that it's like a wound with a scab, and the media just keeps picking at it so it won't heal. These folks have experienced very personal, very private losses, and need to move on. In addition, the police and firefighters are becoming psychologically affected by all the attention and "hero" labels that have been heaped on them - it's too much for folks who expect to lay their lives on the line daily and do so in the background.

We need to heed your words daily, Carlo, and let the event heal. I personally am looking forward to getting past this day.

Kathy, I agree. The media usually tends to take it pretty far. But at the same time we need to keep this event visceral. We need to learn from it. I pray that those who did lose loved ones have an outlet or some form of comfort (and a place w/out a television). I can't blame the media too much because I consider this one of the most important moments in US history. I think our children need to learn about this event and more world affairs, too.
