Not too sure about the German climate, but I would say that the seasons in the UK are less extreme, meaning that the winters don't get quite as cold, but the summers don't get as hot either .....

Having spent a decent chunk of life in Germany and understanding that climate, I would happily have a patio like the one in the pic in that climate, so I'm guessing that I'd do the same in the UK. The fireplace would be good for taking the edge off and I just prefer being outside rather than inside...

To that end, I just installed a wireless network card in my laptop so I can while sitting out on my back patio. Tomorrow I'm going to test the range and see if I can get a signal from down by the pool.
