Wink We lost a friend...

Not sure how many of you have met DaveOnLI at previous meets, but he passed away yesterday. He was dearly loved and I am sure his wife and family would love to hear comments from those who knew him.

Here is the thread:

Very unfortunate news. I never expected to become part of a group like this where the loss of people thousands of miles away would give me a feeling of sadness shared by countless people all over the continent.

My condolences to his family and friends. He's in a better place now.

From Dave's brother Kevin in the other thread:

This is Dave's brother Kevin writing (not Dave from beyond). I am at his house and had to check the computer and clicked on the s2ki icon to see if there was an news posted.

I am overwhelmed with emotion reading the posts to this thread and the expressions of sympathy and love for Dave and his family.

I saw many asking questions about what happened so I wanted to let everyone know. Earlier this year Dave was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder called Wegener's Granulamatosis. Nobody know what causes it. Just something that happens.

Wegener's is treated by chemotherapy, just like cancer, but with lower doses that what they use against cancer. He began the chemo in early July. A common side effect of chemo is that it suppresses the immune system, making the body prone to opportunistic infections. Nearly four weeks ago he began having trouble breathing and was admitted to the hospital. They ran some tests and determined he contracted a serious lung infection called PCP (poly cystic pneumosistis) pneumonia. One of the tests they did in the hospital was a lung biopsy. While doing the biopsy, his lung collapsed and he had to be put on a ventilator to help him breathe. Ultimately, he was never able to get off the ventilator.

Despite all the treatment he was receiving, the infection and the Wegener's progressed. His lungs had difficulty transferring oxygen from the air into the blood stream. They tried to increase the amount of oxygen fed through the ventilator, but it just wasn't enough. His heart stopped beating and he was unable to be revived. He died just after 5 am this morning.

I want everyone to know Dave was a huge fan of "the board" as he referred to it. He was an even bigger fan of the great people he met and interacted with on the board (some of whom I met in Montreal at the 2006 Canadian Grand Prix). He was constantly calling me or e-mailing links to threads. I remeber he could barely contain his laughter about the one this last spring about the guy who "ran" from the cops after a Bald Hill event. Norm dropped a dime and posted a picture of the guilty party who was "crapping his pants" he was so scared. The picture was of Dave's then seven month old son.

That picture was the wallpaper on Dave's laptop.

Thank all of your for your thoughts and prayers.
