I think fishing is a great thing to teach a kid, boy or girl. Patience, attention to detail, and a respect for nature are all good lessons that more kids should be taught.

Eating a fish is not wasteful, it's part of the cycle of life. Catching a fish and using it as bait for bigger fish, also part of the cycle of life. Catching a fish, cramming an M80 down its throat, and blowing it up? Not such a good lesson.
