Man Looses(sic -
) Uncontested Race, Says Polling-Place Closed
Carl Miner was unopposed for a seat on the South Mississippi County School Board in Eastern Arkansas. The previous holder of the seat had died, and the man's widow gave Miner her blessing.
All Miner needed was one vote. But, he didn't get it. He says he wasn't able to cast a ballot -- and his wife didn't vote, either.
Miner is a Luxora city alderman, and won the election to the Luxora city council last year with a turnout of about 500 voters for the town of about 13-hundred people.
Miner alleges that in the school board election his rights were violated because there wasn't a polling place set up in Luxora, as decided by the school board and published in the newspaper before the election. He says he went to his polling place, but was turned away. Election officials say only one polling place was needed.
Now the school board must appoint someone to fill the vacant seat until the next planned school board election -- September 2004.
