Just finished Mariah Carey's memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey. I looooooooooved her in high school but didn't really know much about her, other than her mother was an opera singer. Had no idea about her history of abuse - it explains some of her "diva" behaviour and the disaster known as Glitter. In any case, an interesting read.

Now I'm reading Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End by Atul Gawande

I like reading celebrity autobiographies I'm usually surprised by what their lives were like in real life.

I'm reading Hot Rod magazine, they are getting really thin I hope they can stay in business. I have enjoyed car magazines since I was a kid and hope to keep getting them into my Golden years.

Maybe 10 or so years ago my dad did a huge magazine purge. Imagine, boxes and boxes of magazines from the past 40 years...Cycle World, Canadian Cycle, Hot Rod, Circle Track! I think he maybe kept one or two boxes of the ones he just couldn't let go.

Pretty sure he couldn't bring himself to do that! He ended up selling them to an antique store so hopefully they ended up in a home where they were appreciated.

This was a really good read and helped me feel more hopeful about the medical profession. He talked about his own struggle as a surgeon not being able to "fix" everything, as that's what he was taught in med school. So to not be able to "fix" everyone = failure to him (even though death is eventually inevitable). He talked about the idea that some physicians try to soften the blow of a fatal diagnosis by giving seemingly hopeful information, even if it means the person would have a terrible quality of life. I love that he has shifted from "information giving" to finding out what's most important to his dying patient.

If you're interested in the topic, but don't want to read the book, there's a Frontline (?) episode on youtube with Gawande about it.

No idea what I'm gonna read next. I may or may not have come home from the second hand store with about a dozen books. A few are for my oldies collection (1933 first year Latin text, 1955 copy of Obstetrics for Nurses) so I'm not sure if I want the humour of those or something else.
