Women who are considering leaving an abusive relationship often face many barriers. For some, this includes the difficult decision of whether to leave their beloved family pets behind when there is no other safe place to house them. Many of our residents have told us they delayed leaving their relationships or returned to the abusive relationships due to fear for their pets’ safety. This is consistent with research that demonstrates that concern for pets’ well being is a significant barrier for those wanting to leave abusive relationships.
