Publishers use the impression count to bill their clients. A source of many problems as it often depends on how the publisher records the impression. Some publishers record the impression on the request for the page, others record the impression on the request for the ad itself and yet others record the impression on when the ad has been physically served and yet others record the impression when the page has been physicallay served.
Impressions are normally billed by the 1,000,000 but this varies country to country. Publishers normally have to demonstrate volumetrics and demographics to advertisers to justify the advertising spend.
Getting an ad onto a search result based on keyword is expensive depending on the keyword too. Take for example Yahoo, they can charge a fortune for an ad which is on the results page for a search on keyword "Mortgage"......
Eitherway, by the time I've seen the thread, typed the response, waited for the thread again it'll be 6.
Now I'd argue that muppeting is a serious revenue earner for publishers as I (we) tend to track a number of threads which means another 2 impressions per post
