Naughty America sponsored us... saved us a few bucks.
Here's the writeup I did:
As some of you know, this past weekend I was in lovely (1) Tracy, CA (hour east of Oakland) doing some endurance racing... driving a Ford Festiva hybrid(2). The event is 24 hours of LeMons, except we only run for 14 hours over two days because some moron built his house 1/4 mile from a race track but doesn't like loud noises, and apparently holds a lot of sway with the county. The premise is that the cars can't cost over $500 (except safety gear which has no budget limit). Our Festivas were probably the only cars even close to that limit, but it keeps things entertaining (and fairly slow).
Our weekend went OK. Both cars crossed the finish line which is a big accomplishment, given the premise. 2Fast2Festiva (yellow) finished 51st, Fast & the Festiva finished 60th after not running most of Sunday.
Saturday:
10:30AM - 83 cars take the 1 mile long track. NASCAR ain't got nothing.
10:31AM - The first car DNFs.
11:30AM - Yellow car takes a hit to the front left, bending strut. Strut replaced in 13 minutes(3).
12:30PM - Yellow car begins to overheat (4).
1:00PM - I take an hour long stint, fighting overheating and a 280Z that I couldn't pass to save my life. Festivas don't exactly have a lot of power and I couldn't outrun the Z through the tighter turns like I could against the bigger cars.
2:30PM - Yellow car gets pulled in to the pits because our transponder isn't sending consistently. Most of my laps didn't get recorded.
3:00PM - Tragedy strikes. A driver on another team lost consciousness and went head on into the wall. Race was red flagged (and eventually called for the day) and the driver was later pronounced dead, but it was not a racing accident. Small consolation, the rest of Saturday was pretty somber. Great driver, great car (see: Greatpaint.jpg), and a good competitor.
Sunday:
9:45AM - After a moving driver's meeting, everyone gets back in to finish the race.
10:15AM - I leave the track on a Walmart run, as we're out of water (yellow car's radiator drank about 5 gallons on Saturday, and the 13 people on our team drank the other 10 gallons we bought) and gas.
10:30AM - Yellow car gets black flagged for cutting a corner. Punishment? The driver has to plant a tree at the track while getting pelted with Tofu.(5)
11:00AM - Blue car comes in, running poorly.
11:15AM - Blue car finishes two more laps before grenading. Culprit is a thrown main bearing, resulting in the #1 piston being sent through the front of the block, leaving a 3-4" diameter hole in the block.
1:00PM - Yellow car takes another hit to the front left, returns to pits behind a tow truck. Damage? Snapped steering tie rod. Dan and Nat (our guru techs) tear car apart and find our spare steering tie rod has a different thread. They promptly replace the steering rack and both tie rods.
2:15PM - Yellow car returns to track, with a messed up alignment but otherwise functional.
3:50PM - Blue car gets oil drained, replaced with very heavy oil that won't spill out the huge hole in the block.
3:58PM - Blue car returns to track to finish.
3:59:30 PM - Some a-hole runs into the blue car trying to magically gain the 150 laps he is behind the leader.
4:00PM - Both cars finish, driven by their primary mechanics.
4:01PM - Blue car returns to pits behind tow truck with a flat tire and a bent right front suspension.
Overall a fun weekend marred by the death of a fellow nutjob/competitor. Notes:
1. If you consider a podunk town in the middle of the desert, where it's always sunny, dry, windy, and hot, to be lovely.
2. 91 Festiva body, gutted and caged. 88 Mazda 323 carburetor motor. Ford Aspire suspension, brakes. Random redneck engineered parts elsewhere. The blue car is an 89 Festiva with a 323 EFI motor, otherwise similar parts.
3. The team took a hit to the same corner last summer, and it took 6 hours to repair. We brought 2 pre-built spare front suspensions, and 4 sets of loose springs/shocks this year. We used most of them.
4. The longest the car ran before the weekend was 20 minutes, and that was in 50 degree Seattle weather. It was 85 in Altamont.
5. Black flag recipients get to spin a punishment wheel. Some of the punishments are funny, some aren't. The worst was a blind choice between a pair of condoms, one filled with water, the other with fish oil... driver picked one and had to drink it.
