I test drove both, and I could not have liked the STi less.
It was REALLY, REALLLY ugly. The new "VW Beatle Spoiler" at the rear roofline was HIDEOUS. The rear seats were completely worthless. it should have just been a hatch back. It has the only gearbox I have ever had trouble finding gears in. The blue neoprene interior was revolting. I hated the STi (and I REALLY wanted to like it.)
The Evo has a resonable back seat. The styling is also ugly, but FAR more liveable than the STi. The biggest problem for me is the manufacture. I was worried about reliablity and warranty claimes. I assume you drive off the lot with no warranty anymore.
The Evo's are fast, and technologically on the bleeding edge for a street car. They handle great, but I didn't want to pay $35,000 (IX MR) for a car and get no warranty to speak of.
