i've thought a few times about moving to japan, but i don't think i could ever survive... i can't read and write...but i look japanese, so people assume that i should be able to

We moved to Asia together from the UK 10 years ago (well, in fact I moved 2 months before she did, but there wasn't much of a gap). She loves Asia, but does miss her family in the UK. That is probably the hardest thing with living abroad. She used to work for a broking company (stocks and derivatives) but that took a real nose dive here a couple of years ago. She is now working as a classroom assistant in a Kindergarten, and she loves it
We have a friend who is actually Canadian Chinese, but gets mistaken for Japanese all the time. She was here for a while and hated it because everyone would assume that she could speak Japanese, whereas for us, everyone assumes that we can't so it is much easier for us.

EXACTLY....that's why i hate going to japan..people look at me and assume i can speak japanese...
then i give them this strange puzzled look....and they usually respond by talking louder..

Very frustrating ......
On a slightly different note, I was in London last year and noticed a couple of Japanese tourists at Waterloo station looking very confused and trying to work out which train to get. I went over to them and in my very basic Japanese asked them where they were going ...... it took them a good few seconds to work out that an English person had just spoken Japanese to them in London .....

I know what it is like though if you don't speak the language and are lost, so I always try to help tourists when I see them, both in Japan and in England .....
