I assume that 3.7 is an older Volvo-Penta motor? It's probably only spinning 150 crank power and that boat will be lucky to go 30.

Knowing the kinds of loans you can get right now, why wouldn't you consider a loan on a boat? I'm not suggesting you get a 38' Baja with triple 502s or anything, but you can get a really nice boat for $100-150/month. Everyone I know that has gotten an old(er) boat has had more troubles than it's worth... Especially with non-EFI motors that were poorly maintained...

If you do go with an older used boat, I'd try to find something with a 350 pushing an Alpha drive. The maintenence and parts are much more common and you'll be better off in the long run (plus you might actually get to 40 mph )

Mike, you gotta ride in a tunnel hull some time... 75 MPH with your butt about 3" above the water - amazing feeling of speed...

Though it's hard as hell to hold a beer!

I used to own a VIP Vision that had a 2.3 OMC that was surprisingly powerful. By myself, I could hit 40MPH with my hi-speed prop, but it took a bit to get on plane.

I've thought about buying newer, but with the 'S' payment and my wifes 4 runner payment and the risk of not having a renter and having a mortgage payment too, I'm a little hesitant. I know what you mean about used boats though. All I really want is something that has a decent interior and exterior. The motor and outdrive I can repair/maintain myself...

...But if you know of anyone getting rid of a 38' Baja with trip 502's really REALLY cheap... give me a hollar!

Well, if you want to play the prop game, you can get 50 mph out of that other boat... the area I always boated in had frequent no-wake zones, plus we'd pull a tube or skier - the boat had to be able to get on plane quickly...

Understood.

I'll keep my eye open for the Baja...
