Default 31.3 mpg! Can anyone beat it?

I decided to do a little experiment with the S2K to determine an optimum gas mileage for my daily driving of approximately 50/50 city/highway. I ended up getting 323 miles out of 10.3 gallons of 93 octane. My typical fuel economy is 24 - 25 mpg with my normal driving habits.

For the test I shifted at around 3500rpm from 1st to 3rd to 6th, unless I was travelling up an incline, then I would use other gears as required. It was a boring ride, but the driveability wasn't all that bad. I was impressed with my results of 31.3mpg.

What's the best mileage you've achieved with your S?

24 mpg is about the best I get - and the best I want to get . Short shifting this car, with it's lack of grunt is no fun. I'm frequently in the ~20 mpg range!

...then again with gas prices as they are...

Yea, certainly not something I would want to do on a regular basis.

If I get out and push my car to the end of my street (250 ft.) with the engine at idle, I figure I can get over 200 mpg if I repeat this all day long.

That is a great MPG number.

I have read elsewhere on this boad that shifting like that is a major No-No because of our synchrose. Don't know.

I'm usually in the 19-21 range.

On the way back from Watkins Glen this week, I got about 25mpg. I would probably have done better if it wasn't for a 20 mile run at 100+.

The best I did was coming home from the Dragon last year. I recall getting almost 35 between one of the stops, and around 31-32 for the entire trip.

What is the recommended rpm to shift at for reduced synchro wear?

That would be 9K for 00-03 models, and 8K for 04+ models.

Oh wait, that would be the maximum enjoyment shift point, not the reduced synchro wear shiftpoint.

On a serious note, the manual has the recommended shift points, or as we like to call them, the grandma shift points.
