Default The club??

After the LWG run there was a idea floating around at the table for a change to the club. Some of us decided to donate a buck or two at each meet to help provide things for meets and/or events. Maybe get some equipment together for an autocross event and other ideas. I think since the summer is almost here we should get moving on some ideas and possibly get something done before we lose the good weather and have to put the garage queens in hibernation.
So please post ideas, comments, and other info that might be appropiate. Personally I think this should be headed by Paulie and Mike since they seem to be the most active organizers. I think their histories prove that they can put together well run and organized events but since we are a community this is a communal decision.

I was one of the people at the meet, and the subsequent discussion.

My perspective on the situation:

There is S2KI.com. There is S2KCA.com. Both of these sites are online, virtual communities. (I don

slow day at work Gary BTW I agree with you.

I would like to see some autox events, track days perhaps and our usual drives. I would also like to see some social events as well(Christmas oops Holiday party etc).

A monthly dinner during the week would be nice in and around the Philly area rotating every month. At these meetings we could plan out our upcoming events and get the ball rolling.

In addition I have one question.

Is this going to be an S2000 exclusive club or will we open it up to other marques?

I have no preference just a thought. I consider myself to be a true enthusiast able to appreciate all kinds of sport cars for what they are.

If everyone was as good a guy as Paul I see no problem in it. I think personality and what one can bring to the club is more important than what he drives(within reason )

We could always have a meeting of the officers to decide whether a non S2000 can be in the club. Or perhaps one who does not drive an S2000 can only be invited into the club by an existing member.

Gary I think you summed up most of our discussion. Lets just see what others think and then see where it's going to go. As for what Charlie said about non 2sk owners I don't know how others will feel. I only posted on this board after Paul, Scott, Gennaro, Brooke and I started doing our squirrel nut drives. Since 3 outta 5 people had an s2k we decided this was the best place to meet up and other car boards had that younger immature element. So with that said I don't know how my presence will be taken. I think I have something to contribute since I have belonged to a few car clubs and have autox experience but I don't want to overstep any bounds or cause any split off factions.

On a more serious note, Well said everyone!!!!! I dont have much to add as I was also at the meet, discussion afterwards and Paul and Gary already laid out (very nicely I might add ) what was discussed.

My only caution with more formalization of a club is the accountability and BS that comes with it. I sit on the board of directors of the local chamber of commerce. We are all volunteers. The executive board (yes the board itself) was recently sued for some ridiculous whatever, blah blah blah, long story short, more liability insurance was needed to cover our asses. It amazing how litigious of a society we have become, Im not sure we have the level of involvement we would need to afford all the associated costs of a more formal club? Gary, Paul, anyone, I have never really been in a formal car club...are these concerns?

I dont think the club has to be S2000's only. We obviously all share a certain love for sports cars. It is unique to have so many active members that all own the same car (I think) and to have some S2k only events makes for a really neat eye-opening display!! But without this site and our meets I would not have been fortunate enough to meet Brant and Paul, both great guys who love cars!. I think Paul and enthused active non S2k'ers certainly would add to the club, just as they do to this site.

I do see factions already happening. Only time will tell how this plays out. I sense that some of the negative reasons that the other site was set up and some have migrated too will eventually come full circle to the other site. Its inevitable with growth of a community/organization.

I thought I said I didnt have much too add???

I agree with everything said.

I'm definitely not one of the "regulars" (at least not yet) but I would like to get a little more involved. I like the idea of an official club as long as it does not isolate us from the rest of S2KI (still have open meets and get togethers). I'm pretty sure this is what you guys are proposing. Just something to organize the few "fanatics" and get a few perks in the process.

Also, I'm with Charlie and Mike, I don't mind having an open door policy toward drivers of other cars. As long as the person enjoys our company and has the same enthusiasm we do I think he/she would add a lot to the club.

Are you guys making a fraternity??? LOL

Like Mike said...by forming "the club" you have to directly deal with the BS. Unlike what we have now with Del/Val, sure there is BS...but no need to worry...but with "the club" you risk making a bad name and then no sponsors.....

I'm not sure how I missed this thread for the past 4 weeks :aarp: but I'll add my .02

*as Mike and Jay said above, there are a lot of quasi-legal issues and costs involved: insurance, Bylaws, officers, regular meetings, start-up and on-going legal/acctg costs, annual filing as a non-profit corp, etc. Maybe a website... like Atlanta...
*some of our members may not be willing to commit to the time it would take to run a "real" club; in many ways it's nice to have something informal... as long as it "works".
*to respond to Heyitza's point about the # members... yes, I agree that there are really only 20-40 "active" members on this form. In fact, I've thought about posting a new thread for ppl to "renew" their membership.... and drop the non-respondents from the list/badge, etc.
*some of our more distant DV club members (Destiny2002, Rick H) may feel "left out" of a formal club, since now everyone is "equal"
*if there is a formal "club", this might discourage new people from attending events... since they have not paid the "dues"... I don't think we want an elitist group... may as well buy a Porsche

As one of the more "mature" immature members of this DV club, I would probably keep things in the current informal mode. This would not preclude (**Mike for Treasurer**) maintaining a small $$ kitty for special expenses (like the HIN banner). OTOH, I don't have any objection to converting to a "real" club if enough ppl are committed to it As a few of you know, I'm heavily involved in Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia... board officer for +3 years... so I know a good bit about non-profit volunteer organizations... the good/ bad/ ugly components.

It would be great to hear from more of our regulars....

Jerry

I'm a regular lurker and somewhat mature .I think the prior posts have hit the mark.To take this to the next level means tremendous work and effort as well as cooperation from folks with differing views. The rewards are little and only a few blessed individuals have the stamina and patience to organize a national or local (for that matter) club with dues and a web site.Using our national nsx club as a template our yearly dues are 40$ and we do get discounts with vendors. Our xpo ( national gathering ) can make a moddest profit which goes back into the kitty. Each of the five regions can use an alotment from the club to help underwrite the cost of meets, but we still pay for special events out of pocket. All of the things that you want such as stickers and aparile is available too,of course sites like this and nsxprime also offer un official mark specific stuff as well. There is no simple answar it just takes dedicated people who dont mind enforcing rules and arguing about money.
