Nice dive bar is Jitters, though you'll probably get a lot of people looking at you as that is mainly a locals bar. Good food too.
I vote as well for just parking and walking up Gay/Market. Another great place for food is Penn's Table. Little mom and pop type place with AMAZING fries. I love their blue berry waffle. Mmmmmmm

I love Jitters, the bar manager (Robbie) is a cool guy. I used to live across the street from him. What should have been a $500 tab turned into $50. lol
