Default Definitive Movies

I was thinking, alot of kids (under 21) today have never seen alot of the classics that are alluded to so often, and that modern movies pay tribute to. I want to make a list of movies that are classics, genre-defining, and just plain great.
some examples would be:

Citizen Kane - Considered one of the greatest of all times.
The Jerk - A comedy classic and original
Chariots of Fire
North by Northwest
Lawrence of Arabia
Star Wars
Alfred Hitchcock Movies
Mel Brooks movies
etc.

So list off some of the best and give a brief example of why.

thanks
Dave

I think you need to include SOME 90s stuff...

I can't have a conversation with any other kids about movies unless they have seen Usual Suspects...

I forgot Ferris Bueller. It's not a "great" movie by any artistic measure, but seeing it is a right of passage when you're in high school.
