now for the questions... was this based on real history? was the use of his name "Nameless" just a bad translation to english?

No Chinese movie is ever based on real history. Everything is made up. Though the period in Chinese history is realistic.

The English names of the various characters are fairly faithful translations of the Chinese: Nameless, Broken Sword, Flying Snow, and I forgot what Donnie Yen's character was called.

I don't know what you mean by "the 20th symbol". When was this written, as in what part of the movie?

Is it in the scene where the arrows are flying through the building? If so, I think the word that was written was "sword", but not 100% sure because it was written in the Chinese equivalent of cursive. It had to do with the bit about calligraphy skill being telling of sword skill.

If you liked "HERO" you might like "Warriors of Heaven and Earth"? I think thats what's it called. You can rent it at Blockbuster.

I thought Hero was good, but House of Flying Daggers was even better. The wife even cried during HOFD, much more touching storyline. Cinematography was just as good, I thought.

Just got done watching this movie (slow Saturday night). I'd have to say that the cinematography is phenominal. I'd say it's on par with "Last of the Mohicans," which has some of the best use of vivid and colorful nature scenes. HERO's use of color and natural backdrops is simply stunning.
