Default ROBOCOP (2014)

Saw this movie last night, a solid 3-3.5 out of 5 for me. I will keep my initial thoughts spoiler-free.

It’s getting mixed reviews from fans of the original cult classic mainly because they changed quite a bit of the story and it’s PG-13 rating as opposed to the R rating with extreme violence in the original.

I didn’t mind the PG-13 rating as I’m not a big fan of gore anyway, but more than that, I liked the many changes they made. It was smartly updated for our times and showed a futuristic society where there was a realistic need for a half man, half robot.
A lot of time was spent on the human/robot dynamic with Murphy’s family and the ongoing political debate in the U.S. (which I felt was overdone on the part of Sam Jackson, but a small gripe).
This movie wasn’t a masterpiece, but then again the original was far from it either.

Without getting into spoilers, I liked how they went into a lot of detail about how the Robocop system works and is controlled and they gave us a new look into the man inside the robot (this part was a “wow” moment for me that I didn’t see coming, but added to a few of the shock moments in the movie). I especially liked how Robocop’s movements were updated along with the sliding visor. It would have been stupid to have a Robocop that walks at a snail’s pace when we have Asimo who can run already. I love how they still use the silver armor, although most of the movie is with the black armor.

The action sequences were good, story a bit predictable and acting was so-so but I think if you are a sci-fi fan and just like seeing futuristic takes on society and robotics, along with always wanting to see a badass, anime-style fast moving Robocop, then you will probably enjoy this movie. Having that said, my wife and friend didn’t like the movie nearly as much as I did. I think Robocop is akin to Pacific Rim—go for the cool sci-fi visuals and in this case, new take on an 80’s classic, but don’t go in expecting something to blow your mind like Inception or the Matrix did.

I'm a fan of the 80's version. I like fast anime and sci fi. Sounds like the is calling my name.

I hope they brought back Steve Mihn from the original. The way he delivered, "Ahhh..FCUK YOU!!" was truly Oscar worthy.

The movie was good, not great. But I prefer the 80's version.
