Default Sweet red wine?

is there such a thing? somebody said i may be looking for "port" (?). my wife enjoys wine - but she likes her wine sweet, and the closest thing to that has been the Cafe Zinfandale by Ernest & Julio Gallo.

If you want a sweet Port, then a "Ruby" port would probably be best.

I don't know of any sweet red wines, so port may be your best route
though it is usually drunk after a meal, rather than with it, and is generally
heavier than wine.

(also be careful, as port is usually around 20% proof, as opposed to wine
which is usually 12-14% proof)

Sly is right about the Manischewitz. They make something called "Extra Heavy Malaga -
A specially sweetened fruity wine with a generous mouth feel. The distinct aroma and flavor of fresh Concord grapes." My mother likes it too!

Not for the connoiseur but, your wife might like it!
Wine is about what tastes good to you. She shouldn't feel "odd" if this is what she likes!

While I wouldn't serve it on a first date for fear of being mocked, Arbor Mist wines have a 'splash of fruit'... I've heard really nice things about the Blackberry Merlot, which might be just what you're looking for. As a big plus, it's cheap and readily available.

PS - For all the wine purists out there - I formally deny making the above statements

Mingster, here's an idea. Why not have some fun with her on this subject.
Go find a wine bar or wine retailer that offers wine tasting. She might not know what she likes
in a wine if she doesn't drink much. It's a great way to learn about wine and what tastes
good to you. Which, by the way, might not be the same as the next person.

You know what, I think I'll take my wife out this weekend wine tasting!

You should try some port. I got B to drink some of it, and she loves it. Very sweet, but very high in alcohol content. There's also a lot of late harvest zinfandel stuff that is pretty sweet.
