Thaw
This review could be considered a vague spoiler...so if you want to be totally ignorant to the qualities of this film read no further.
This came out last year and I guess nobody saw it? I sure did not hear of it, a must see for horror fans. This closely matches Carpenters The Thing in it's premises, except we are dealing with Canadians and Canada's frozen north.
Stars Val Kilmer, and we don't see enough of him but he is an integral part of the plot. I am guessing the low budget only called for a limited time for the real star to be on screen. The rest of the cast are unknowns in my book, they do a great job of being horified and doing things that seems logical and realistic considering their situation, so it is well written.
There is violence, gratutis bugs, some guts, and dead animals and people, so for the squeemish don't bother. But this little film does not make itself on CGI effects only, there is a rather tight plot which unfolds in an interesting way, sure we have at least one twist at the end, maybe more.
So, if you want to see a film about Canadian's waaaayyy up north doing what American's do at the South Poll, then you may want to see this film. We have limited helicopter action, ATV rides, gunplay, at least one explosion, shallow graves, infection, meat cleaver action scene, self sacrafice, allot of barfing, unhappy graduate students, irony, a female lead who developes as the story goes along, twisted plot angles, mystery, and bugs.
The title is Thaw, I think it was also released as Frozen. I give it a solid 7 outta 10,, cause I am a fan of Val whatever he does and I was horified at least once.
