I haven't been on the Dragon yet, but there are a few things that get quoted plenty in Dragon threads that are true, really, no matter where you drive, and especially so on a special case like The Dragon.

1. Lane Crossing Kills.

2. No story you can invent to try to justify crossing the double yellow is valid, no matter who you think you are or how well you think you drive.

3. If you feel like you have to cross the center line, you're driving above your skill level. Slow it down, because you're not ready yet, no matter what you tell yourself.

4. You're not impressing anyone by driving fast but stupid. Actually, they're making fun of you.

5. Those people you're trying to impress would rather see you drive slow and perfect than push yourself and your car further than you can handle and screw up your car, yourself, or worst of all, someone else.

6. The guy behind you riding your ass or honking his horn doesn't really want you to go faster. He just wants to out of his way. Better to move over and let him go than to let him pressure you into doing something you don't want to do or can't handle.

7. There are cameras everywhere at the Dragon. It seems that the various forums have proven that if you show up and drive like a maniac, someone's going to post your picture and flame your lack of skills. The Internet will remember you as an Asshat forever.

When I finally show up at the Dragon for the first time,
* I'm going to heed all the advice I've culled from these groups.
* I'm going to make it my mission to stay perfectly in my own lane.
* I'm going to keep an eye on my speed and anywhere I'm not perfectly comfortable, I'm going to slow my ass down.

...And I have a feeling I'll be pulling over onto those little paved/gravel areas quite often to let impatient, irritated, more experienced drivers go past, because I know that I won't impress them in the least by trying to speed up.

almost 100%. On the westbound run there are very few places to pull over. So patience rules. Even coming back, the gravel pulloffs are no fun. So don't be too annoyed if that Prius or Grand Cherokee in front of you does not pull over. (but actually one did pull over for me). It is a public highway.

I have only seen this once - at DBR '06 actually. It was a contractor in a white diesel pick-up truck. He was in the other lane, honking, flicking people off, high beaming, doing everything one could possibly do that didn't physically hurt someone to a pack of cruising motorcycles. It was unbelievable. The people who are the Dragon to have fun are typically very courteous to everyone. Most people understand it is a public road and it is easy enough to turn around at a gravel pit or at either end.

There is definitely a "do unto others" rule out there.
