Default Moving to Greece

First post on this forum...
I will move to Athens, Greece in Feb and considing to get a S2000. I understand that as a non greek citizen i can drive a car on foreign licence plates there but have to take the car out every 6 months.

So I need to find out what to do:

1) Buy a new S2000 in Greece (price?)
2) Used S2000 in Greece (price?)
3) Buy new in other EU country and register there (which place is cheapest)
4) Buy used in other EU country

any ideas / advise appreciated.

with best regards

Hi dane, and welcome.
There seems to be a lot of 'greek' activity on this forum recently, surprisingly.. Check this thread for advice :

With the Euro it should be fairly easy to compare prices now.

Where are you from?
I think to get a car with "foreign" license plates you need to live in that country.. not sure though

Driving with foreign plates here can cause you troubles and a fine that acounts for much more than what you save from buying in another country. A new S2000 will cost you about 47000 Euros and a used one about 40000 Euros. New one will be MY2000 as the importer didn't sell all of about 90 cars they import the first year! Additionaly most of the S2000s in Greece have been in major or minor accidents, so a used one is not the best bet. There are about 3 cars for sale now on the ads by private party and many more used ones for sale by dealers. If you buy a new one you'll get a 7 year unlimited milage warranty!!!
If you are a Greek and you are moving back home you are allowed to buy a car up to 2.0 liters displacement tax free. I hope I was of some help to you , and I'll be glad to be of further assistance. Alex.

thanks for the replies and suggestions. must admit that i find it a bit strange to purchase a new car which in fact has been sitting in dealers lot for 2 years, unless the price is heavyly discounted. you also mention the new cars come with 7years full warranty - what about the used cars - they must be under warranty as well?? dont want a wreck though!

if a greek moving back home can get a new car w/o tax - what about another EU citizen moving to greece? (I am from Denmark). could i buy w/o tax? how much is tax by the way for a 2000cc car?

i will most likely stay in athens for 2-3 years, so it would be nice if i can sell the car again at that time without loosing too much. in case i pay tax on a new car, could i have it refunded if i bring the car with me out of the country? is it possible to lease from dealer/importer/others - any idea about the cost ?

thanks in advance!

Dane the price I told you is already discounted, last year was 5800 euros more.
Cars sold after Nov 2001 have 7 year warranty before only 3 (mine is 3 ) .
Any Greek moving back can buy tax free (or buy in another country and import it without paying import tax ).
This will save you about 8000 Euros but you cannot sell the car before 5 years of ownership .
You can sell the car in another country though or pay 20% of the tax amount for every year remaining to reach 5 years of ownership .
If you pay tax there is no way you can get a refund , in that case you better sell it to Greece as you can get a higher price .
There may be some 2001 models imported but up to now all VINs I saw in showrooms suggest a MY2000
You can lease an S2000 through many financial institutions but some rough calculations suggest that you pay about 1400 Euros per month for a 5 year lease including insurance .
You can get it financed by dealer with minimum 30% down up to 72 installments and 0.72% per month .
So make your thoughts and calculations and tell me what you think of doing .

Hi Dane!

Greece and Denmark are both EU countries. I am not sure about the tax issues, but what I do know for sure is that when you buy the S2000 in *any* EU country, it is fairly simple to import them into the country where you will be living. Just make sure you get a COC with the car (Certificate of Conformity - It's an official manufacturer's document stating car specifics and that it meets the European Whole Vehicle Type-Approval requirments according to the Council Directive 98/12/EC - In this case *any* EU country has to accept the vehicle without any additional test requirements and/or mandatory modifications). If you buy a used car, you might want to obtain a COC from the official importer of the car before exporting/importing it; the same rules apply!

Good luck!
