Any tips for a Sebring virgin? I plan on camping in the infield with a few friends.
Sebring is a fun experience. You will see a true cross section of humanity. I believe it’s like a little like Mad Max meets Martha Stuart. There will be a Million dollar motor home next to a $200 car with an old army tent and everyone is having fun. Over 100,000 people will be there for the race. This is one of the great events in motor sports and it is in our own backyard. Have fun!!!!
Be warned that it gets pretty wild in the Green Park area (down near the hairpin , turn 7) People will be partying till very late at night so be ready for not getting much sleep.
Bring everything you would need for wilderness car camping. Think comfort. If you have room, bring it with you. Usual stuff: tent, air mattress, camp stove, pots pans, folding table to cook on, eat at, chairs, canopy, lantern flashlights, can opener, lighter. Ice is available but expensive so bring as much as you can. One advantage is that you can head into town if you forgot something. Not close but you can do it if it is something critical.
Bring an AM radio with headphones as the entire race is broadcast on AM 730. It is a great way to find out what is happening during the race.
Bring your camera, lots of photo ops on and off the track
Buy a program. Kind of pricey but lots of info on the cars, the race and info about the track.
If at all possible, do not bring a nice car to the race. All you will do is worry about it all weekend. Review my bonfire next to my tent and car in an earlier post and you will understand. After the race on Sat. night, many large bonfires are built and couches that people have brought to the raceway are burned. ( I have an entire photo collage of the couches of Sebring LOL) It gets crazy and I have seen several burned out cars on Sunday morning. Just be aware of what goes on.
Much consumption of alcohol will take place. Use a cool head and if any situation arises, just walk away. The combination of sun, lots of walking and lots of booze makes for some pretty trashed people. Have fun but be careful.
I am staying at my cousin’s reserved spot near the hairpin. We are going to try to have a big Ferrari flag up so look for us. My name is Chip so just ask for me. PM me if you want my cell number.
I have a question, does anybody know if they let you camp out in the free spectator lot right outside the track? I wouldn't see why not, but seeing as I've only been to Road Atl, I don't know the rules at Sebring.
