I my 87 turbo 300zx had a spot that looked buffed out on the front of the hood when I bought it. One day in jut the right lighting I saw why it had been buffed out..........scratched into the hood were the words "EAT ME" 
From there on it was known as the "Eat Me Mobile" and I actually had a front plate made to read in japanese the same words. I guess the previous owner pissed someone off.
Sorry to hear about your misfortune.....remember, it is only a material thing and that karma will pay the perp back.
