Awesome! The A-330 is a BEAST! Only a handful of runways long enough, right?
My late grandfather was one of the beginning pilots for Pan Am back in the day... Be used to fly the old Clipper flying boats down to Dinner Key from Miami, then started trips across the Pacific, where you had to literally set it down on the ocean, and sleep overnight. He then was one of their first pilots trained on the 747. He ran routes from San Francisco to Tokyo, Seoul, and Phillipines.
I never got tired of his travel stories...

Like your grandfather I flew the 747 in the Airforce but won't be on it for awhile.
Eric, I would love to come see you but I won't be on the 747 for years.
The Delta deal costy me a lot. I won't move up as fast now and will never fly as captain on the 747 or whatever the replacement is because of all the pilots that got slated above me. I lost 2 1/2 years seniority.
Oh Well! as long as it helps the airline stay in business.
Wow. Well, my grandad is not on that list, but I know he flew the old clipper ships. He started with Pan Am in 1939 running overnight flights from Miami to the Carribean... for $115/week! He was certified on the Convair PB2Y-3R seaplane.
He was then certified in 1970 on the 747... Here is a pic of his old pilot's license (the only one we could find)...

Here is his obituary if anyone wants to read it... He apparently also flew the Beatles in 1965 and was actively involved in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam as a pilot.

He was a great man and an amazing pilot.

Cool if you don't mind I'll pass this along to my daughter in law. She may be able to find some pictures of him for you in her collection. They all knew each other.
If she has any, I'll pass them along.

ps If you get down to key west, go to kelly's. That's Kelly McGinnis's (Topgun) place.
They occupy the building Pan Am started in. There's a bunch of old photos on the walls of the bar.

Feel free. If you can find some old pics, even better! I agree that they probably knew eachother. I think there was only like 2-3 Pan Am flying boat captains still alive. Whenever any of them dies, it is reported in some Pan Am pension newsletter. We notified them of my Grandfather's passing, and they published it.
I believe he flew mainly Carribean/Miami from 1939-post WWII, then I think he shifted out west, based out of San Francisco.
