Default Half Shaft Spacers

Well, my Koni shocks finally arrived and I picked up some 2nd hand espelir springs (thanks Joey). Not going to go too wild with the lowering...just the top perch and the springs, which I hear will cause about a 1" drop.

But in researching before the install, I found a bunch of referrences to half shaft spacers. There seems to be some debate over when they are needed. Some say only if the car is "slammed" and tracked. Others say if lowered at all.

What's the scoop...Todd, Chiung...thoughts?

id say not needed.

cars using/companies that make them (besides motorklasse) all created them to use on their downforce cars

which are all lowered 3-4" and increased HP+track use

if you do a little research on forum theirs like only handful of people who ever had half shaft failure and 90% of those tracked car, HEAVILY).

NOONE who has spacers has reported problems..but then again.. maybe they dont abuse car as much

i figured for the.. thousands of thousands of s2k's... i found like 9 w/ problems.. 8 of which tracked car and were slammed.

if you got the time and $, get em and i guess u can feel safe.. but for me.. im going to wait until the driveline vibrates upon accel.. swap the halfshafts and at the same time install them... for the price of inner CV joints its cheaper to replace them then buy the spacers imo

Robert to answer you PM on the spacers I will agree with rijowysock. The ones who have problems are few and far between. Most of the S2K that own springs, like you now own, are not having any problems with the 1/2 shafts. I have 2 customers on Tein RAs and they have reported no problems. Both of these cars are dropped 2+" in their lowest setting. The stress of tracking the car when an aggressive stance is taken on the suspension height, only adds to the wear and tear of other less solid parts. The next weekest link will be the CVs and 1/2 shafts as well as any rubber components that deal with twisting & turning while transfering power under extreme driving conditions. The end links on the sway bar and the bushings that surround the ball joints that see those conditions on a regular basis, get compromised. On a low suspension the 1/2 shafts are already pitched higher at the wheel/spindle side than at the diff. As the vehicle rolls and pitches up and down while hitting bumps and dips the CVs begin to travel further outside of their recommended travel area. This is where problems will arise.

Hope this info helps.

Have a great day!

Thanks both...

Since I may never have a problem with the CVs given the small drop I'm planning and only occasional tracking + monthly autocross (and twice annual Dragon )...sounds like a good plan to wait till the CVs are making noise then replace plus add the spacers.
