Default I have a mystery noise

Hi all,

I haven't been here in a loooong while, but I have a new noise that maybe others have experienced and might be willing to opine on.

The noise is audible at very low speed (don't know if it happens at higher speeds due to engine and road noise) like when I am reversing out of a parking spot at 0-3 MPH or so. It sounds like a clink/clunk/tink as though the spare tire hold-down is loose and the steel wheel is knocking against it. But I checked that and the tire's secured tightly.

The noise seems to be inertia-related, happening at the high acceleration moment from 0 to 3 MPH, and from 3 to 0 coming to a stop. It sounds like it's coming from the right rear of the car. It usually happens when the clutch is partially engaged, seeing as how that's always the case at takeoff, but I have tried engaging the clutch nice and easy so my foot is off it at like 3 MPH and then hitting the accelerator. I still hear the CLINK, so it is not a clutch engagement issue.

Any ideas?

Bill

Just one click when you start moving or multiple clicks (click click click...)?

If just one click, then I'd say John is spot on...your axle hub nuts need to be retorqued to 220ft-lb. Take care of it soon...too much delay can lead to a worn out wheel bearing.

Multiple clicking like a front drive car , could need CV joints . The S for the sake of having an independant suspention has the same type CV joints a front wheel drive hs so if you know what the split boot dried out CV joint clikclikclikclik souns like and the noise is the same it would be bad joints . I think it is the nuts needing torqued to 220 though If you can drive the car into an area with buldings on both sides so echo the noise so you can hear it better

I hear it just once, not a click/click/click. The car is an '04 with 38,000 miles. I will certainly check out the rear CV axle nuts.

Thanks!

If it is a click/click/click i wouldn't worry about it. Now a click/click/click bang needs a little more attention.

For the click/click/click/bang POW with black smoke. That means a lot os stuff has gone wrong.

I hope this helps!

Seriously if you don't get it fixed by the Poker Run then there will be a LOT of people that can help you out.

If it isn't the axle nut, it could be your clutch. I had a similar noise. When I slowed down with the clutch pedal pushed in when coming to a stop from ~3 mph to stop I would hear this noise. It was like the clutch wasn't disengaging. It sounded like it was coming from the rear as well.

This is what the disc is supposed to look like.

This is the broken disc

Broken part causing the problem

Another good possibility. Thanks, phish. And Primo, I don't commute down McMullen Booth anymore so I don't see you around...
