Default Initial Segway Test Sites in Florida

If you see the Segway being operated by Tampa or Ft. Myers postal carriers, let us know! See below:

Postal Service Testing Segway Transporters Locally

Tampa Tribune
Jan 8, 2002

TAMPA - Beginning Monday, five letter carriers in south Tampa will test pilot Segway Human Transporters on their routes.

Tampa is one of three cities, along with Fort Myers and Concord, N.H., where the U.S. Postal Service is experimenting with the battery-powered, gyroscopic-balanced scooters for mail delivery.

Two carriers on Davis Islands and three in the surrounding neighborhoods who typically walk part of their routes will spend 30 days using the transporters, retrofitted with shelves to hold the mail. The carriers left Monday for training in New Hampshire, where the transporters are made.

Riders stand upright over the scooter's single axle, steering with a bicycle-type handlebar. One battery charge lasts 15 miles over level ground. The 80-pound devices sell for about $8,000.
