Install and shine help requested
As many know, I'm prepping for HIN Orlando on July 8th. In the next week or so I'm going to have a lot of new engine toys coming in. Although I don't need help with their install, it would go WAY faster if I had some. New parts include an alternator, radiator hoses, Hondata gasket, etc.
Since I'm doing the alternator, I'll probably do the main belt, as well. With the intake header off, I'd also like to shine it up... I know that's a big job, so that's another reason why I'd like some help. I figure 2-3 people all working at once could easily do the job on a Saturday or Sunday and still have time for me to buy them a beer and steak.
Any takers?

I was gonna say that is going to cost a lot of beer, but you threw out the steak too.
Better be careful, this could turn into a mini mod day at your house.
I would help, but I will be deported for a bit again. When more of you all meet me you will understand why.
Good luck.

I will probably be doing this myself but I'm sorry I won't have time to come over. I will see you at the show with your new paint job and toys. It looks like we will be head to head but I don't have a new paint job or sponsors.
If the shop stuck to its 3 week time frame, the car should be back in my posession this Friday. Of course, nothing ever works out the way it should, and I could only get a hold of the shop's answering machine yesterday, so we'll see... I'm not that hopeful. for the moment, I'm driving a Saturn Ion
I would gladly make it an all-day affair if others need help on their cars (though living in an apartment I can't offer any space of my own)... unlike Rob, I'm pretty handy with a wrench and don't mind getting dirty. All of the items I want to do pretty much entail removing the same parts, that's why I suggested doing them all at once. A lift would be ideal, but I have jackstands and a decent jack.
If someone can provide the grinder, I'll pick up a bunch of sanding pads, polish, and other supplies... just let me know what we need.
I really want to get this done before HIN, not just for the bling bling, but to show my sponsors I'm ready to move up to the next level of products. More toys came in yesterday, but it looks like they were the incorrect pieces... I'll have to remedy that quickly.

Normally, I'd be happy to jump in and lend a hand but unfortunately the timing is just off for me right now.
A few tips from my own polishing adventures:
For the alternator and other parts w/ crevices; when you buy those little cloth disks for your dremel, decide how many packs you think you need, then triple or quadruple that. Seriously. Those disks either wear out or get over-saturated w/ polish very quickly.
For parts w/ casting or otherwise non-smooth surfaces, the quickest way to smooth them out is w/ an air grinder using a surface prep pad. This however, will leave swirls that are too deep to buff out. I had good luck by hitting it next w/ an orbital sander using 220 grit. That leaves a nice dimpled finish that is shallow enough to buff out w/ polish in your next step. I've found that in most cases trying to hand sand them w/ very low grit paper is a losing proposition.
Get a pack of those disposable vinyl gloves. When you're polishing stuff, your hands will get filthy and then you rehandle the part you just polished and it's dirty all over again. W/ the gloves, you just pull 'em off once you need to handle the finished part. You'll save yourself a lot of aggrivation doing it that way.
For either the final polish, or for soft aluminum parts, I've had real good luck using a 4-6" cloth wheel attached to a drill press. You probably want to get one wheel for each grade of polish you'll be using. Otherwise you end up w/ a single grade of polish , no matter what you actually prep the disk w/
Back to the dremel tool. Put a good layer of duct tape over the chuck. Your hands will slip and it sucks to put big gashes in your piece from the dremel chuck.
If anything else pops into my head, i'll post it here.
Good luck
