OP: it's fine to weld new mufflers on the stock exhaust. Just the tips would be a bad idea. But you won't know what you have until you've got it, and many of the advantages of weight loss you won't gain.
But you can get a sweet sound and look for less money, depending on the cost of a used after market exhaust. Keep us posted and let us know what you do.
