XP and OS X run faster on a Mac...
Considering the NEW Mac Pro is $2799, I will exclude that. Dual Xeons are pretty high end stuff. Where are the iMacs or mid range Macs running Core 2 Quads or faster Core 2 Duos (3.0 GhZ)? Where is the 1333 FSB? Where is the 800+mhz RAM?
In the realm of regular desktop computers (~ $1500), my Dell will blow away any iMac/Macbook/MacBook Pro on Xbench runnng on Leopard (10.5.1). Not to mention on any version of windows. I've run the test and checked the Xbench site. Best of all, I spent just about what the baseline iMac cost.
Apple only offers low-end and high-end hardware. Nothing in the middle. Also there was discussion on the Pcworld bench of the Macbook Pro being faster than some of the laptops they tested with windows of comparable specs. There are now faster units.
If Apple really had balls they would revise their license to let people run OSX on PC Hardware with non-hacked drivers and such. That would be interesting. Then you'd have more PC folks saying, my "blank" runs OS X faster than a Mac.
I will say I generally like OS X, and have been using it primarily for a month or so. It has much less overhead than Vista, and it is much quicker because of it. I also like that fact my hard drives don't churn.

well.. this wasn't supposed to be a mac vs. PC thread, but I guess that inevitable.
Now back on topic about the Air.
The things I find so amazing about the MacBook Air is what's missing:
Firewire
Optical Drive
ethernet (Cat 5)
Instead of creating a faster, bigger machine with more plugs and do-dads, Apple chose to simplify their approach to laptops and embrace high speed internet access as the main source of media and software. It's slimmer in more ways than one.
But this just makes sense, and my bet is that the PC world will continue to follow Apple in product development and we will see many "air" look-a-likes. No doubt they will be cheaper, but will they run as well? Look as good? doubtful.
And it was smart for Apple to rid themselves of the optical drive if they hope to "rent" more movies from itunes. Today you can slip a DVD into just about any laptop and watch it, but without the drive it needs to electronic. Sure you can rip the DVD on another machine and transfer it over, but isn't is just easier to rent from itunes? Apple is betting it will be.
It seems that medias days of being stored in anything but a digital format are in fact numbered. Why carry around cumbersome DVDs? CDs? Are you kidding me? Today it's iphone ipod and air. It's easier and faster. Computers are getting smaller and more friendly.
i like that.

So funny...
I think the Air is a nice product, but considering the $1799 price point and NO user replacable battery I would never buy one. Most everyone I know has gone through a laptop battery. Do you think you should have to send your whole computer back to Apple to get it fixed at their leisure. Not to mention it probably cost an arm and a leg considering how much they charge for an ipod battery replacement.
Wall Street isn't very happy with MacExpo. The stock is down nearly $10/share as I write this, well off the high of $200. I own the stock so I'm quite miffed on this.
