Default MASE'D

Had my car tuned by Mase this weekend at Velocity Trends. It was unseasonably hot (95F) and he had to battle heat soak quite a bit. They only had one small shop fan and given it could not blow on top of the engine it was about as effective as a hampster blowing through a straw. But Mase really spent some quality time with my car to acheive some pretty good results.

Last week I added some bolt-ons to the car. I installed a coated toda header, T1R 63mm test+catback, and VAFC (a comptech CAI was already in place). I was not expecting huge hp/tq gains from these mods (nothing really does boost the s2k numbers other than boost). But I did net a healthy 42lb weight savings even after adding 6lb of sound deadening. BTW, I love the T1R 63mm...absolutely great sound without the 3k-4k rpm drone of the Invidia. And I think the sound deadening helps with livability for top up driving (I have no problem hearing my whimpy stereo). WOT reminds me of a sport bike at full chat.

I didn't have time to dyno prior to those mods, so this post is only for the VAFC tune.

Baseline pull:
195hp
133tq

Final pull:
203hp
138tq

The big gains were seen mid range between 5k-6k rpm just prior to normal VTEC crossover. Peak torque in that range was ~110 ft-lb baseline; ~125 ft-lb final. Peak hp in the range was ~125hp baseline; ~140hp final.

His trick for that mid-range increase appears to be a lower VTEC engagement point. Looks like it kicks in around 4800rpm. Result is a much more linear power progression based on the dyno plots. Plus, it feels like 2 VTEC engagements now. Can feel a slight kick at 4800rpm and a very smooth increase at 6000rpm continuing to the mad hatter rush to 9k rpm.

I would definitely recommend Mase...he is very maticulous and serious about his work. I had heard negative rumors relating to attitude and cost, but I found them to be completely unfounded. He was very easy to get to know and work with and kept working on my car right through lunch until we finished around 3pm. Cost was not bad considering the dyno time at VT does run more than places like Central Florida Turbo.

Overall...very please to say, I've been MASE'D.
