My next sports car no doubt will be a BMW since Honda is sleeping at the wheel.

Beautiful...much better than the Z3 or original Z4. But just too damn heavy at 3450-3500lb.
You have to drive the car.
This is a hardtop conv. A sub 3000 car will rattle to all hell. Unacceptable for 45k!

Neg!! Your killing me man. BMW measures there curb weight by EU standards. That includes 150kg for the driver and luggage.

I regurlarly drive a 2005 M3 convertible since it had 3 miles on the odo and it rattles and squeaks ... That car was 60k when new ...

OK...If it is EU weight, then it is still 5-25kg heavier than the 1-series based on the tech data sheets for both. So it should come in weighing 3380-3430lb unladen curb weight. Still too porky for a roadster.
Now if they had been able to get the weight down to 3200-3250lb, then it would be interesting. Considering the last Z4 weighed in at 3090lb, they should have been able to add a retractable hardtop for 150lbs if they used lighter materials.

4LEX in car talk sumed it up quite nice.
All the cars released nowadays are inevitably going to weigh more than the generation they replace. With stricter safety standards (increasing number of airbags, electronic nannies) and gadgets (sat nav, heated, electric seats - they weigh a ton, climate control), every big car manufacturer has to please a increasingly demanding market and govt safety and emissions standards. Niche car companies like Lotus are now expanding their lineup to include such features (the Evora). I mean how many people actually daily drive their Elise?
It seems odd to me that some people still expect a car to weigh no less than 3200lbs. Especially when it comes to a ''luxurious'' sports car. 99,9% of the customers won't even care if the Z4 is slower around the track than an Elise. Unfortunately, the only ''hardcore'' cars left are the S2000 (which to most people, would be uncomfortable) , Elise, Ariel Atom, etc. These cars will never be segment leaders, which is what BMW is attempting to do. The next gen Boxster will probably outweigh the current gen unless they downsize it like Nissan did with the 370Z.
