is the only way to check if a piston ring is bad is to remove the piston or just by doing the compression test i know that the piston rings are good ? anyone ?

Typically a compression or leak-down test will help to diagnose if the piston rings are compromised. If you already have the head off then looking for uneven wear on the cylinder walls would be another way.

alright, we replaced the head gasket, took the head to a local machine shop and replaced the valve seals and had the head re-surfaced. i installed it back in the car and the S turned on wonderful and no more smoke....but now i have another problem that i dont understand why is happening all i did was head work and gasket replacement, NOW the v-tech doesnt want to kick in or turn on. i replaced the gasket on the v-tech so the filter is nice and clean. why doesnt the v-tech work? any ideas or suggestions....

how do i check the oil pressure on a stock s2k....?

Did you check the oil level? VTEC will not engage if you are low on oil.

Get a multimeter and check the connections at the harness for the solenoid. I don't have the resistance specs but someone else may.

Definitely worth every penny to have a Helms manual with something like this

Good luck in figuring it out. I'm really relieved the smoking stopped

I know my way around this motor, i did this job on my S when I installed a 3mm headgasket from inlinepro to boost my car. The check engine light is not on.
