Default Oil consumption question

Question from an old lazy guy... suspect this has been asked often but anyway... got a 2008 with about 950 miles on in... been playing the break in game by the book... motor has never seen anthing north of 5k and have varied speed and RPM during the few miles I've logged to date... noticed I was down about a third of a quart when I checked the oil today... is this normal... thinking about taking a drive this afternoon and after hitting the magic 1,000 miles exlporing the other side off 5,000 rpm. Great forum, by the way... I'm an old gear head and still manage to learn a great deal from all you folks. Thanks.

Very normal , the sales person should have told you about the fact this car will use oil . My brothers used over 2 quarts before the first 3500 miles . Mine uses .5 to 1.5 between oil changes after 33800 miles . Oil use depends on how I drive of course

your 2008 is normal. my 2007 burned about the same amount during breakin. after breakin, our 2.2 liter motors burn very little oil. in fact, mine and most burn less than a 1/4 qt in between oil changes. i drive my car harder than most but i am very anal about maintenance.

the 2.0 motors (2000-2003 yrs) were prone to heavy oil usage. they can easily burn a quart or more in between oil changes.

refering to oil changes, i am implying the typical 5000 mile oil change. please note the 2006 and up models have a "oil maitenance minder" which notifys the owner via the dash when an oil chage is due. it's a great feature and i have no issues with using it as my gauge of when to change the oil.

since you have a 2008, i suggest you read the owners manual and it will tell you about oil consumption and about the "oil maintenance minder".

Expect to see the car use oil while you are breaking it in. Oil seeps past the piston rings while they are seating.
According to manufacturer standards acceptable oil usage is anything less than 1qt every 1000 miles. But not even my car does that and I have an ap1 that I dont exactly baby around

Make sure to keep a close eye on your oil while you are learning the habits of your car. And then after that I usually check it every time I wash the car. Oil level and cleanliness is very important in the S because of its high revs and VTEC system that uses oil to change the cams over.

Had four turbo buick cars... a regal t... real sleeper, bench seat, skinny little pep boys, side view mirrors, shifter on the column, and an AM radio in the dash... had a weird history... a buick tech custom ordered it from the factory... the thing would flat out run as long as the road was straight and you weren't in a big hurry to stop... learned that the car is actually worth some money these days... to bad the guy that bought it painted it purple and turned it into a 1/4 mile car... traded it for an '89 turbo trans am... cool car for a year but just wasn't as much fun to drive as the turbo regal... then bought an '86 and made some money on it and bought the '87... miss it sometimes but I'm an od road racer, go karts and some SCCA... it's nice to be in a car that scoots, stops, and turns right and left without a whole lot of drama... I love the s2k but no one ever wanted to steal the seats out of my GN's... these are great forums... i do appreciate learning from you folks.
