Default Replace valve retainers

I have 60k miles and thinking of having this done and also a dyno tune. Easy job do it yourself or not for a rookie? Anyone in the Daytona beach area to do it and the dyno tune recomended?

You need a way to keep the valves closed while you remove the retainers. Otherwise the valves will drop into the cylinder. Some mechanics use compressed air to hold the valves up when the retainers are removed.

You'll also need valve spring compressors.

If you have all the right tools its not complicated. Main risk is from accidentally dropping a keeper into an oil passage.

It may be cheaper in the long run to pay a pro than it is to buy the equipment you need.

Are you getting an engine management system? If you need a dyno tune for that, then Mase is not far from you. He's on the south side of Jax about 1.25-1.5hrs from you.

I agree with Negcamber. This is no rookie job to do.

This is a job easier to paya small fee to a pro, versus more money if there is a mistake made.

My question is, why do you want them replaced after only 60k??
Is there a problem, or just being cautious??

My S is mainly a track car. I follow the racing competion thread and it has been recomended by robrob that 2003 and older have this done. For a couple bill's it's peace of mine. Now just to find someone local to do it that i trust. Mase engineering in Jax has my trust and i would like to have it dyno tuned, see if the car is as weak as i think it is hp wise.

Like everyone says it is not a bad job with the right tools. There is a special tool that screws into the cylinder and uses air pressure to keep the valves up.

Since you are close to Mase definitely have him do it. You could spend more money in the long run if you messed something up and he will make sure your valves are set right.

I checked with a local mech and he said about $1000 to do the job. Ouch! Anybody else want the job?
