Default share your thoughts on wing install

i picked up an OEM trunk lip wing yesterday from VolkGT-n. as most of you know it requires drilling at least 2 holes in the trunk lid.

well, i don't always like permenent things like holes in exposed body panels.
this OEM lip weighs very little and is really for asthetics more than anything else, so what are your thoughts on just using some 3M double sided trim adhesive tape instead of bolt and nuts?

this is the small OEM trunk lip not the bigger OEM wing.

the 3M stuff should be good enough? thoughts?

TIA

I say try it, and if it doesn't work out for you, then bolt it on.

Here are the instructions for bolting it on.

No way, Jose... That sucker is coming off...

It may feel secure, but down the road that tape will lose its strength... At speed there is lots of wind pushing and pulling it in all directions... Not worth the risk and liability, IMHO.

Use the bolts.

FYI................

Believe it or not, I put the OEM wing on My new Cooper back 2002 when I first got it and the OEM specs said to use this special double stick tape. It came off twice and they had to eat repairing it and repainting both times. After that experience, I made them secure it with fasteners. The thought of somebody sueing me over this was too much to bear.

The Point: If you want the spoiler/wing....fasten it the way the mfg says to.

I know you don't want to damage the trunk but it's going to get damaged either way. With the tape, the things going to be vibrating against the paint and will damage it anyway. Plus, with sun fade, if you ever take it off, the paint's not going to match. So you'll have to get the trunk fixed anyway. They could always repair holes in the trunk.

I see trades all the time for trunk w/spoiler for no spoiler. I don't think you'd have a problem getting rid of it. Are you not sure you'll like it?
