we need to go in a decent shallow section with some meanders in the river the more turns, the deeper the erosion into the bank and hopefully more material

Fltsfshr I trust you on the location scouting

it has been a few years since i have been down there.

I am going to get my mom in on this she has contacts that do "teeth" expeditions down on that river so I may be able to get some good locations from her, and she may want to come along.

Finally....a "s" group of people not afraid to get their hands dirty I kid, I kid but this is the first down and dirty cool nerdy type event I have come across on these boards.

I am in on this foe show!!!!

I know just the place. We've been going here for a long time, theres always more. Rivers shallow and meandering, we just wade and scoop. I usually don't dig banks but I'm interested in them when it's shallow.

I make a frame of wood, usually 18 by 24 or so, nail a float noodle to it so it floats easy and put small mesh wire on the bottom. Then i put a rope on it to pull it and we just shovel or scoop into it.

Honestly though you can find just as much stuff with a colander. We should get Dean to come along and he can provide ongoing biologic commentary.

Jillian (My +1) is a Geologist and led a bunch of field expeditions for fossils when she was teaching at U of F. One of our very first dates was fossil hunting up N of Gainesville. (Yes, we are BOTH dorks). we would definitely be up for a fossil hunting/identifying trip.

Yes.....you all know how nerdy me and the first mate are. She would love doing that. Let's plan it soon.

On a similar note, would anyone be up for a peace river cano trip?

Yep Fossilized ones.

Seriously mostly what we'll find is little sharks teeth and maybe a couple good sized ones. Some fossilized bone fragments occasionally. I know about 10 years ago one of the schools was excavating a mammoth skeleton just upstream from there.

If you get real lucky you may find a 2" or bigger shark tooth.

Stuff like the a mammoth tooth and megladon teeth are very scarce. That's the first mammoth tooth we've ever found and we've been going there a long time. The guys who get the really big shark teeth dive the gator holes in the everglades. Not me.

I'd be into a day of doing that how the Saturday or Sunday after Easter? We all meet in arcadia. Maybe the Capn's wife knows a better place.

Where I go is no big secret, it's just N of arcadia by where the airboats launch.
