Default Groundhog

Ok so I come home to find a nice sized hole under my front porch on Mon, yesterday I finally see the culprit. It is a friggin big ole ground hog! So here is my question does anyone have any experience with getting rid of these things? It already stared eating my wifes flowers that I got her so I had to move them to the deck. I went and bought some "groundhog repellent" but I don't think its working, and I can't get animal control to come out they just want me to rent a cage so then what do I do when he comes out and is caged look at him? I'm thinking about getting an airsoft gun and blasting it out but I don't want to hurt it or kill it. Any suggestions?

haha well.... we had one get into our radio station storage room. After it listened to a few old records, it decided to hide in the wall. We called animal control and they told us the same thing, to get a cage/trap and catch it. However, once we caught it, they came and picked it up and released it into a forest a few miles away. So - you may ask animal control that if you catch it, will they come pick it up IN the cage?

Animal control will only trap it, not kill it. Deterants such as repellants do not generally work from my past experience. You can try to flood it out by shoving a hose down the hole.

Baiting a cage is the most humane way to deal with it, but it will take you a bit longer to trap it.

Another opeion is get you FULL growler, a lawn chair and a BB gun and go on a GH hunt.

That sounds like a good thing to do if it isn't gone by Sat! My growler is waiting for me in the fridge....

I understand going the humane route but I know of several people that have been bitten or worse using traps on such rodents.

Also, I wouldn't one my little one crawling around the yard and then have one of these lurking around...

I would use a .22 on him and call it a day. A well placed round from .22 unlike a bb gun would take him out quick so no suffering. Anything more powerful would alarm neighbors or possible hurt someone else should you miss. Your welcome to use the Walther P22. Its concealable as not to draw attention while your taking care of business.

Other options. Wait until he's out and quickcrete up the hole but leave some room for top soil. Then go al natural and "mark your territory" all around where the hole was. Might work, might not but it would be a funny story to us none the less.

My son was 'edged' by his friend a while back when they found a ground hog in a field.

Reportedly, they found it, and it seemed 'friendly'. Eric's friend called him a 'girly' word for not approaching it. Well he did. He ended up getting bit on the hand. A very bad wound it was. They took the offending animal (live! at the time) to the humane society for rabies testing. All turned out okay in the end.

So -- do not pick the ground hog up like a pet. duh. You'll end up with scars.

Use explosive devices instead. Pellet gun, C4, etc...

I don't want to jinx myself but I think I may have gotten the groundhog out....My buddy came over with an airsoft gun and we lit the hole up... Since then I have filled the hole up and so far it has not come back! I'll keep everyone posted.
