Sound Advice
Looking for advice as to what, if anything, to upgrade from the standard sound system & in what order of priority: head-unit or speakers - what's the weakest link in the standard setup?
If I replace the head-unit, do I lose the remote audio controls: mode, channel, mute, & volume?
Alternatively, should I consider adding an amp?

Also adding rear speakers of some sort (Spods or behind seat) will help tremendously
Because you have the 2006 MY, hookup the rears before you go to the effort of replacing everything. If you decide to replace everything: the good - lot's of advice locally, web shopping makes it relatively inexpensive for quality stuff, and you could set up a special install day for much needed help. the bad - even with help, it's a long day.
Good luck with your decision.

The order in which everyone performs sound system updates differs based on what you prefer.
Order in which I installed.
Rear speakers
New HU and AMP
Sub
Another AMP for sub
If you switch out your HU, you will need to get modifry's conversion to allow you to use the hand controls
Do you already have rear speakers in the MY06? If so, they may need an upgrade to something more powerful. There is a tremendous difference once you can hear sound coming from the back. Some people have stopped after just that modification.

I'm confused: I thought the MY06 came with head-rest speakers installed & already hooked-up - did I miss something

So what's everyone talking about when they refer to "rear speakers" - is that the ones in the roll-hoop, or are you (all) talking about additional speakers in the rear?
I can never hear much out of the "factory roll hoop speakers" - is that area only fit for a tweeter upgrade with mids placed lower, behind the seat?
The hint/link to modifry was really useful, thanks.

You can put speakers behind the headrest or behind the seat. There is a panel you can take out behind the seat, probably cut and place a speaker there.
Right now Z06-KILLR is helping me install new subs in the trunk. We made a panel that fits in that well where the tools in the trunk are, had two openings cut for two 10" subs and then wired an amp to them and to the stock head unit. We are going to finish up this weekend.
I think it all depends on how much you are willing to spend and what you want. I would say the best thing to do is sit in someone's car and see what their s2000 soundsystem sounds like, if they have extra speakers, have them turn off the sub, give it a listen, turn on the sub give it a listen, see what actually sounds different from your stock setup. I would go for the sub and an amp first, see what it sounds like and go from there. Some of these set ups can take a amount of time and money.
