Default got a question

MAN, i just checked my oil and its a little below half. But i have over 11,000 miles on my s2000 and i think i remember reading somewhere on here that the car wasnt supposed to burn oil after 7000 miles?? is this normal or is everyone still burning oil after even the 1000 mile mark?

This is a hard question! Every engine are different! I'm not sure how to answer this, but even if you break down ten F20C motors and check for all the measurements and tolerances; they might be exactley the same, but none will have the same exact same Hp. (might be close, but I doubt more than half will be the same!)

It also depends on how you have broke-in the motor for the first 600 miles! (Actually this motor is not consider fully broken-in until over 10,000 miles!

Will, I guess I'll have to let others to answer this question, so you can find the real answer yourself.
I will tell you this. On my 2001 yellow S2000. I used about half quarts of oil when I have 1,000 miles on the car; after 3,000 miles, it has cosumed over one quart. After the oil change at 3,750 miles, it didn't use a drop of oil till I wrecked (totaled) my car around 4,500 miles.
Now, I have the 2002 Sebring Silver. it's already 2,000 miles on it and have not yet gone below the FULL mark??

Does that answer your question?
Make sure that you top up the oil now! I know more you VTEC, more oil is going to use!

Have you switched to synthetic oil yet? (Mobil1) If not... do that.

TonyJ, some S2k's continue to use oil slightly even after 10,000 miles. On this car you should check your oil often. Don't expect the engine to never use oil, especially if your into the high RPM's alot. My car has 11,000 miles and still uses a slight bit of oil between changes.

SilverStreak, what's the BFD on synthetics? I've never heard anyone say that they switched to synthetic and the car stopped using oil. Oil consumption is based on mechanical tolerances in the rings and pistons, it shouldn't matter what lubricant is there. I still don't see the advantages of using a synthetic . The only difference I have seen between standard and synthetic oils is that the viscosity of a synthetic is slightly more constant over a temperature range but it didn't look like too much of a difference overall.

If I change my oil per the recommended intervals then why would I spend 4-6 times the cost on a quart of synthetic oil versus regular Mobile 1 dino oil?

Truth is that the synthetic is a better sealant and protectant of the engine than the dino. And it's not that expensive. It's common on the board to find where someone started using Mobil1 and the oil consumption dropped drastically. I am a good example. If you look you will find that more folks are using the synthetic than the dino.

Facts and data are better than opinion... Did you know that even thought the bottle says the oil is 100% synthetic that it only contains 80%-90% synthetic "base" oil? The rest is "carrier oil" and additives. Some oils, like Castrol Syntec, are not even synthetic at all but get away with advertising as such.

Unless someone can backup the advantages (if any) with hard data then I'll stick with regular Mobile 1 petroleum based oil. The only data I've seen is from the companies that sell the oil, so thier opinion is a bit too subjective for me.

So what is the reason. Just because something costs more that does not make it a better product. What's better about synthetic??? I've seen a lot of marketing hype but no proof.
