HOA's are cringeworthy... it seems to be the norm now.

I blame realtors equally for the mess up here. House prices went up way too quickly and by too much. Pretty much everyone who bought a house in 2002-2004 up here is screwed. We're still upside down by $30k from what we paid for ours 15 years ago. We'd love to move, but I just can't bring myself to lose that much money.

Luckily there aren't many up here. |

I run hot and cold on them. I like that they enforce some sort of standards but I do not at all like the idea of having to run paint colors and window covering selections past them. A happy medium is okay. Just no parking nazis please. :fingerscrossed:
I wouldn't mind too much if it were for the good of the community, but some of the rules are just ridiculous. Not parking in the yard, sure, but in the driveway? Nope, pass. |
They're everywhere here. The fees are through the roof too. $1296.13 mortgage plus $235.00 HOA dues... Can't do it. They're anywhere from $125.00 a month to $600.00 - just for HOA. Dangit, man. That definitely falls under the "if you have to ask you can't afford it" clause.

NoVA is just like what Alex is saying. It is very, very hard to find a community here that has zero HOA.
