So if you spray crap and kill all your weeks, then seed two weeks later, how long before you have grass again? the spring?

Likely never. But it depends on how strong the weed killer is. Some of that stuff will hang around for months and stop the new seed from germinating.

 

If you want to kill the weeds then immediately reseed, you need to cover with black plastic for about a week. Should be perfect time to reseed by the time it's all good and dead. Beware, though, this kills everything. But, it sounds like there isn't much grass anyway.

Problem is if the pH is too low, growing grass isn't going to be that easy. So, he could still end up with even more of a mud pit this Winter.
