My honest opinion is that unless you REALLY plan on getting into photography, a DSLR is a total waste. Canon makes an amazing P&S that is every bit as good as the high-end consumer DSLR's.

If all you want is REALLY good photos, you don't need a DSLR. I got one of these for my sister for Christmas and I played around with it quite a bit while we were in San Fransisco. All I have to say is that I think it takes better shots than my 40D that cost twice as much.
