For deck footers, we made the hole the size of the concrete footer we was pouring.

All you need to do, Zeke is contain the concrete somehow so it adheres to the post. You can either just dig a reasonably sized hole or use one of those tubes. In theory, the bucket would work but I am suspect because they are really smooth and are smaller on the bottom than on the top. That means they could pop out of the ground fairly easily.

FWIW, the posts for my front porch are set in buckets.
